By the time you read this I will be in Tokyo! I am spending my 60th birthday in Japan visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Matsumoto, Kanazawa, Osaka and Koya San. Phew!
There are many temples and shrines on my itinerary, a tea ceremony and a temple stay, some traditional Japanese gardens and zen gardens, even some anime and manga. And lots and lots of trains!
This has been my dream trip for years so I am really packing it in. And, yes, I will be there for cherry blossom season.
I expect it will be the simple and unexpected things that will delight me most. I’ve been practising by simple Japanese phrases and googled maps and transport. But I will never really be prepared.
And it’s not just me going but my whole family so there are four people’s expectations to manage! I think the only thing we can all do is go with an open mind and heart and let Japan work its magic on us.
Normal service will be resumed next week when we look at the theme of abundance. And I will slowly over time catch up with you on all the wonders of my trip over the next few months.
Sayonara!
About me: I am a western Buddhist in the Triratna tradition and have been practising since 1986. I have a love and admiration for the simplicity and beauty of Japanese culture and aesthetics which appeals to my zen minded being. Happy Birthday and enjoy Japan. Check out the origami / paper museum if you have a chance. Beautiful papers....x
