Over the last decade or so my preferred listening has been jazz. In particular contemporary modern spiritual and Nordic jazz. The improvisational nature of jazz is itself a form of meditation. It flows, shifts and moves, it is fully present. Meditation has had an influence on many jazz musicians, most notably Coltrane who it is said conceived of his work A Love Supreme in meditation.
I particularly like Manchester based musician Matthew Halsall. With titles like The Temple Within, Salute to the Sun, and Oneness it’s fair to say spirituality runs like a golden thread through his music.
Matthew Halsall also set up Gondwana Records, home to many other wonderful modern jazz artists. Including: Hania Rani, Mammal Hands, Portico Quartet, Vega Trails, Svaneborg Kardyb and Jasmine Myra. All worth a listen.
